Sightings

Venerdì, Gennaio 4th, 2008

It’s nice to wander the Po valley plains and suddenly glimpse this kind of momument, reminding us who we are and where we come from. Thanks to Fabio Vetro for the pictures (there are more) and to Valeria for the post.

From mother to daughter blog: a fresh start

Lunedì, Dicembre 17th, 2007

Davide Ferrario and Andrea Zambelli, producer and director of “Mondine - From mother to daughter” (the documentary about Mondine di Novi and Fiamma Fumana. I write about this here and here) have decided to move the film premiere from the spring to the Fall 2008. And for a very good reason: there is a lot of very high quality footage, they need extra time to edit it and make a wonderful film, that will make people laugh and cry. So we decided to reform and relaunch the project’s blog: also, we will do several things with the Novi choir from here to the Fall. We have a new domain (mondine.it) and a new group, with my old friend Valeria Carletti as the main blogger and a more recent friend, Freddy Mascheretti, to take care of the relevant technology. We have a guru too, Luca “Vanz” Vanzella of Daimon and Maestrini per caso: he has been so kind as to give us some good advice over dinner (Eritrean restaurant), but of course he bears no responsibility over our modest, utterly unprofessional blogging efforts. And good luck to us! You can find the new blog here./

Christmas lunch with mondine

Martedì, Dicembre 11th, 2007

Great party in Novi: a big meal to celebrate Christmas with mondine. We ate (excellently, as always when these ladies are involved), we sang a lot and we enjoyed sketches of folk theatre (in dialect) by the Gruppo Padano di Piadena, who by the way sing VERY well, they are a sort of male mondine. A nice discovery! Mondine also set up a Christmas-themed theatrical piece of their own titled “If the three Kings were women”: Agnes was particularly unforgettable as the Ox, with a sign saying “mad cow” hanging from her neck. Great stuff. Happy Christmas to all!

Voices of the world

Martedì, Ottobre 30th, 2007

Artistic director Donald Shaw and his people at Celtic Connections have called a press conference and gone live with the 2008 website. What a lineup! Flook, Steve Earle, k.d. lang, Liam Clancy, Mercedes Peòn (we crossed path at Folkwoods, in Holland), Solas, old glories Moving Hearts, Eliza Carthy, Peatbog Fairies, Le Vent du Nord, Michelle Shocked, Bill Wyman (BILL WYMAN?), Capercailie, Trilok Gurtu… And yes, we are there too, in the Voices of the world together with theBulgarian Women’s Choir Angelite. No Uncle Earl, though: their place - quite appropriately with the rest of the night’s lineup, I think - has been taken by the Aberfeldy Gaelic Choir, conducted on this occasion by Margaret Bennett, high-ranking vocalist and mother of our much-missed Martyn. Gulp. We really must be super-ready for that.

Lady J Ph.D. in history of the rice weeders

Venerdì, Ottobre 26th, 2007

She’s not writing about it on the blog (being modest!), but this week Lady J goes back to school. She’s been offered a place as a Ph.D. student at University of Siena: she is going to study Hiistroy of the modernization, with a dissertation about… rice weeders! Which seems a really sensible choice, given the extra privileged access to sources we enjoy. I hope she will interview me too, since I feel like a honorary mondina myself ;’)
Meanwhile, I arrived in Sevilla to attend WOMEX. I’ll write about it in the next few days.

From mother to daughter-The movie: the first glimpses

Lunedì, Ottobre 22nd, 2007

Shooting for the Mondine movie is officially finished: we have been editing since September. For now, Zambe the director has put together this showreel, which contains footage (and audio) from the Detroit show cut with clips shot in various other occasions (at Arezzo on May 1st, in Detroit, on the rice paddies) and vintage repertoire material. It was really emotional to watch it… I can’t wait for the film to be finished.

Celtic Connections!

Sabato, Ottobre 20th, 2007

GREAT NEWS! Frusion’s Ian Smith called me to announce that Celtic Connections has booked our show for the 31st of January 2008, with Mondine and all! We are still waiting on the details (press conference is on Wednesday next week), and the same night the website will launch, but it appears they are setting up a “Voices of the world” night with us, the Bulgarian Women’s Choir (not sure which one) and American girls Uncle Earl. The whole thing should take place in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall… the ladies will be delighted, especially Agnes, the Scottish Rice Weeder, a Glaswegian…

A night out with Mondine

Venerdì, Ottobre 5th, 2007

Just a quick note to highlight Sunday night’s show, at the Civic Hall in Novi di Modena, with the legendary Novi Rice Weeders Choir. I almost forgot about it, then this morning they called me for radio interview… whoa, dude.
Anyway, every year the rice weeders organize a few events in Novi, their home village, to honour the memory of Torino Gilioli, the first choir director, who passed away a few years ago (it was he was directed the choir in “Four Piedmontese” in our first album). I can’t wait to see them! This wil probably be the last From mother to daughter show in 2007, so don’t miss it if you can, it’s worth it!

Through festival coordinator Steve Heath (you can read here his passionate account of the From mother to daughter Detroit experience) Rebecca Cook sends us some very nice pics of the show with Mondine. More, please…

Home again and good vibrations

Martedì, Luglio 24th, 2007

We are home! We traveled with mondine to the Milano airport and parted there with loads of hugs. This morning I got an emotional email from Steve Heath, the Concert of Colors festival coordinator:

I cari amici,
Wow. What a weekend it was for us in Detroit! I want to send our heartfelt thanks to all for your great contributions to our festival and for making the 2007 Concert of Colors one of the most memorable in our 15 year history.
It’s unlikely that the city of Detroit will ever be quite the same after your memorable visit and the mark you left everywhere, from the concert hall to the People Mover, to the hotel lobby you charmed everyone in your path. We want you to know how much it has meant for us to have you here for this very historic production. I must tell you that this was probably a record crowd for us in terms of the participation of the Italian community at our festival, who don’t normally attend in big numbers. It was also one of our biggest crowds for an act performing this early in the day. (Usually on the final act and penultimate act perhaps get crowds this large.)
The ovations that the audience gave you, even before you began to perform, were richly deserved, not just for your performance, but for the inspiration you have given to so many others. Inspiration to resist injustice whereever we may find it, inspiration to not let barriers or boundaries inhibit us from pursuing our dreams; whether they be barriers of geography, economics, age, sex, or opportunity.
You probably already saw the article in the Detroit paper from Saturday, but here’s a link for you just in case: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007707210375 . Also, be sure to go to our website at www.concertofcolors.com and click on the photographs to see the fancy footwork of the dancing Mondine.
We won’t soon forget this experience (because we’ll be eating your Parmesan cheese for weeks to come!) As I told Alberto upon your departure, regardless of what we may do in the future, we know that at least once, on this very special moment in time, we witnessed something truly magical.
Baci, abraci a tutti!
Ciao (for now).

STEVE
