ok,
mi sono appena fatta la terza dose di biscotti al cioccolato della giornata quindi ora, ho la giusta concentrazione di zuccheri nel sangue per scrivere.
Ultimamente abbiamo tentato un change d’immagine, se ne sono accorti soprattutto gli amici della mailing list che, non ci hanno risparmiato le critiche.
La sperimentazione è allo stesso tempo affascinante e pericolosa, si sa.
Beh almeno ci fatti quattro risate.
Cmq. non siamo gente che demorde al primo tentativo infatti, pensando alla copertina e alle foto del disco, il discorso immagine è tornato fuori a bomba.
Per un concerto o due passi, ma le foto rimangono ed io, ci tengo a far sapere ai miei nipoti che da giovane la nonna era una tipa cool.
Come si fa?
dunque, ingredienti per copertina e libretto cd incontestabilmente belli:
_Avere un fotografo serio e creativo che tiri fuori un sacco d’idee su cosa, dove e come, scattare le foto.
C’e l’abbiamo si chiama Andrea e ha già proposto dei concept che mi piacciono.
_ Trovare una/o stylist che ci faccia sembrare una band pur mantenendo le nostre particolarita’ e che, soprattutto non mi faccia portare le gonne.
C’e l’abbiamo, si chiama Rossana e credo abbia capito che avrà un bel da fare.
_Una truccatrice che esalti la nostra “naturale bellezza” anche sotto le luci flashanti del fotografo.
Se poi arriva anche con un fondotinta giusto per la mia carnagione, le accendo un cero in chiesa.
Mmm..c’è c’è.E’ Karin, ancora non le ho parlato direttamente(esce fuori dal cappello a cilindro del nostro fotografo) ma, il nome già mi piace.
_Un grafico all’avanguardia ma con un piede nel passato che faccia un mischione di tutti gli ingredienti sopra-citati e , ne tiri fuori la più bella copertina mai vista…nei FiammaFumana.
E’ in via di definizione, aspetto solo che il corriere gli recapiti il vassoio di dolci che gli ho spedito or ora e poi, sarà dei nostri anche lui.No doubts.

Scrivo sul mio mac con entrambe le mani anche se vado a rilento…insomma sto migliorando!

Per rendere questo cd già meraviglioso (:-)) ancora più bello abbiamo chiesto ai Transglobal un remix! Hanno accettato volentieri e Peter ha preparato la session da spedire da Dusseldorf a Londra. Non è stato facile decidere il brano ma considerando bpm, temi e atmosfere quello che ci sembra più adatto e Immagina. Sentiremo da Hami e Tim la reazione; spero che i ragni, le chele e le squame li ispirino!

I brought the CD to Marco’s office, and everything seemed to go down well. He really liked the Navi version. I expect we’ll hear from them some time this week.

I would like to remind you (and myself) of two problems which we ended up not really tackling while recording.

1. the “pagan” drums in the chorus of Corrente nera. What we had in the end sounded quite tame…

2. the electronic percussions and loops in Strade. We still feel that some electronic music-Warp style elements hould come in earlier in the game, in the version we had on leaving the studio le loopy bit was a little unprepared.

I would not know how to solve this. I really hope you do!

anche io sono tornata a casa, stanca ma felice per il lavoro fatto in studio.
Ieri, come da programma sono stata a Terni a farmi operare al gomito destro: costrizione del nervo ulnare, un taglia e cuci finalizzato a risvegliare le ultime dita della mano destra da un po’ di tempo molto capricciose.
Ho aspettato di finire le registrazioni del disco perchè il recupero mi prenderà un po’ di tempo, ma non preoccupatevi sarò in forma per i concerti di Aprile! in gran forma!!
Adesso mi riposo e approfitto delle coccole che spettano ai convalescenti…

Hi world, I’m back to my flat in Milano and it feels great after all of this studio life! However, we still have a lot to do to get the album done.

It looks like we might have chosen a photographer, though the deal between him and Mescal is not closed. His name is Andrea Artoni: I’ve worked with him in the past, and I think he’s really good. See what happens. Medhin is going to take care of photo and artwork issues, working in connection with the photographer and the art director.

Late late night of the last recording day (save for, er, the occasional bits and pieces - promise, Pete!). It’s not very creative work - basically a lot of hard drive housekeeping and backing up. All’s been said, the album’s great, now Peter has to take care of mixing while we pick a title (new idea: can we get away with a subtitle? Like Manu Chao did, “Clandestino - Esperando la ultima ola”, we could have “Prendi l’onda - If you can’t ride wave then you’re gonna go under”. Or could we?), get a photo session and a video and stuff. And we’ll blog it all, no fear. After all this, hopefully we all understand more audio than we used to. And that includes Lauro (our banker) Navi and his lyrics, my brother Lorenzo and me, and Jennythestudiodog.

Ieri sera è stato qui!!
Lui! l’attesissimo, il magnifico, il cittadino del mondo, il globalista, il rapper dei rapper: MC Navigator (Asian Dub Foundation), per gli amici Navi.
Appena arrivato ha fatto due chiacchiere con Peter sui problemi del mondo, poi ha chiesto di ascoltare in loop la parte di Prendi l’Onda su cui avrebbe dovuto rappare, si è seduto sul divano, carta e penna alla mano e ha cominciato a scrivere.
Sono passati 40 minuti (…tutti ipnotizzati dal loop con gli occhi a spirale come i cartoon) e Navi ha deciso di saltare la cena ( e noi con lui) per non perdere il mood ( “Ehy Man!!”) e buttarsi nell’Onda.
Siamo rimasti sconvolti! ha fatto una take geniale con un testo brillante e Prendi l’Onda è sempre più bella! Ha poi doppiato la voce, ovviamente perfetta e ritoccato qualche punto (per lui) imperfetto.
La serata è proseguita con la cena e un lungo racconto di Navi in Giamaica, più che un racconto un vero e proprio show. Poi di nuovo a parlare dei problemi del mondo…”Ya know man., these fucking tax, man, for these fucking governments, man…i’m serious man…ya know …it’s ridiculous….like crabs in a barrel..”
Io e Andrea dopo un po’ abbiamo cercato di chiudere la festa e andare finalmente a nanna; tra un problema del mondo e l’altro…alla fine verso le 3.30, con l’aiuto di Peter, l’abbiamo mandato a dormire….poco, visto che questa mattina alle 8e 15 avevo appuntamento con lui per portarlo in aeroporto.
Anyway… done, man….well done!

…insomma questo titolo?
dateci qualche altro suggerimento abbiamo bisogno di mettere insieme tutte le idee, ispirate o meno, per scegliere la più bella. Il problema è che la più bella non è necessariamente la più efficace. Io mi sono affezionata a Mappa Mondo (scritto così) fin dal primo istante! Ha dentro il succo dei FF e in particolare di questo disco, ha il roots, il global e il futuro. Mi fa stare bene pensare a un disco che si chiama così e che contiene le Mondine, i Transglobal e Navigator ( a proposito di Navi nel prossimo post vi racconto la serata di ieri… ). Prendi l’onda ha i suoi pregi ma mi fa sempre venire in mente lo scaffale delle librerie con i manuali di tutti i tipi: “Cura il bonsai”, “Perefeziona il tuo inglese”, “Cucina Sushi ai tuoi amici”, “Prendi l’onda”….aaaah!
A parte gli scherzi sono certa che troveremo il titolo giusto e sicuramente … dopo qualche borbottìo (se fosse P.l’O.) mi piacerà!

For the first time in my life I did not know the title of the album before I even started making it. And there are a lot of things to think about, such as:

1. Americans don’t like Italian titles, unless they are very straightforward (like “Aria”, “Ciao” and similar). “Prendi l’onda”, my favourite one (but not LJ’s) is not simple enough.

2. The Italian public would find it really too strange end pretentious for an Italian band with Italian lyrics to release an album in Italy with a title in English. So we can’t afford “Wave” (good though!) and similar.

3. It would be a mistake to have the same album with two titles, since today’s music is database-driven.

So we can do one of two things. Either we ditch point 3 and go for the title with the most impact on the Italian public, which seems to be “Prendi l’onda”. Or we hold point 3 firm, and we discard every title which is not international. In the latter case, “Mappa Mondo” is probably the best we have come up with.

Or we can call it just “Onda”. Or even “Mondo”. Oh, whatever.

Valerio Soave, Mescal’s president, wants an English version of Check in. My friend Mike Brooks, lead singer and author of Welsh band Here Be Dragons, contributed very good English lyrics, which Peter and I edited up a bit. Another challenge for Lisa.

My apologies for not joining in with the blog thing. The guys have been keeping me tied to the computer for the last weeks.

I feel that we now have most of the ingredients to bake the perfect cake! (That reminds me….. Albi’s birthday is fast approaching on the 8th of Feb… don’t forget to send those emails in!!)

Tonight we finished the vocals. Lisa has performed magnificently and compliments all of the beautiful recordings so far by Alberto and Jessica. I will have so many memopries of our time spent here together in the studio. There have been many ‘firsts’ for me. My only experience with the piva before this album was with a band called ‘Kissing the Pink’ where we got a Scottish piper to play on a track called ‘Can you here Me?’ That was back in 1986!! Mondine has got to be a highlight. I was so excited to have them in the studio. My main worry was to make sure that we captured the ir amazing spirit. It really is something to be savoured.

Tomorrow the Navigator arrives. We have spent many hours tracking down exactly the right guy for the Prendi l’ Onda rap. I am sure he will deliver the goods. Thats if he actually gets here! In the last week he has been in Toronto, Jamaica, UK and Germany ! Next stop Rubiera!! Yo Navi.. Get down!
