Visto da vicino è 1 radura con 1 leoncino spelacchiato in mezzo…il leoncino pensa a 1 disco fatto con 1 fonico, 1 produttore, 7 microfoni, 4 computer, 1 piva, 1 cantante, 2 divani, 1 scatola di cioccolatini, 5 caffè, 1 bottiglia di vino rosso, 1 pro tools, 1 cuoca, 1 fisa, 1 videocamera, 1 cane, 1 chitarra, 20 sigarette, 15 mail, 2 pacchetti di gomme, 1 basso,2.. .3..4…5….. It’s impossibly clear and cold weather here in the Emilia flatland. Lady J is thinking of going out jogging (seeing is believing, that’s what I say). As for me, I want to subscribe to a local gym, but I did not actually go there today because today’s schedule got screwed up in a nice way when Peter came up with a TOTALLY DIFFERENT version of Strade d’appennino. Wow!
So I sit and read the usual bullshit about Berlusconi in my favourite newspaper (il Manifesto) and wait for my turn to record guitar until, finally, we are ready to do it and we actually do Angiolina. It’s good to have some actual instrument on hard disk!
Here’s a good tip for making a record: always show up late on the first day. Your producer and the engineers have to hack their way through the studio: which Pro Tools release, which plug-ins work and which don’t installers, signal routing blah blah blah. So I show up at 6 p.m. with my best smile and a box of chocolates, and no one’s done anything yet except fuss with the computers.

Ci siamo, abbiamo finalmente iniziato a lavorare..come potete vedere la concentrazione è massima e l’atmosfera seria..quasi gravosa.
La foto risale a ieri sera..oggi abbbiamo (diciamo hanno: Peter, Andrea che è il fonico residente e Moka) preparato lo studio. Io nel frattempo mi sono ambientata e ho studiato un po’ di spagnolo..visto che con l’inglese ormai sono un fenomeno! :-/
Poi nel tardo pomeriggio abbiamo provato i microfoni per la piva che suona benissimo nella sala di ripresa dell’Esagono, bene! Peter ha scelto tre Neumann: due U87 per l’ambiente e un U67 di fronte al chanter, il risultato è un suono caldo e molto vivo.

Peter emailed me back. Apparently he likes neither of my two new ideas… He’s probably right in both cases. I will not mention to him the piano octave in Strade d’appennino, but I may make a case for the vocal intro in Non di sola andata.
Getting packed up to go right now. Lady J and Peter are already at the studio, they called me from there (well, not really from the studio: they were actually at some local restaurant eating gnocco fritto and tigelle, which are delicious and simple specialties only found in central Emilia). So I guess we are all set and ready to go. I will sleep this last night in my home, and tread on studio turf tomorrow. By the way, this is what the studio looks like:

La stampante non funziona, l’auto ha un problema elettrico e ha difficoltà a mettersi in moto, internet è stata off per qualche ora. I bagagli sono pronti, quelli personali e tutti gli strumenti, ma ho la fastidiosa sensazione di aver dimenticato qualcosa. Di solito preparo tutto all’ultimo minuto invece questa volta ho fatto tutto ieri e credo che non sia stata proprio una buona idea…
Ho cercato una parte nuova di piva per “La vien giù”, un brano tradizionale che forse sarà nel disco, non ero convinta della versione fatta in pre-produzione anche se a Alberto piace tanto. La riascolterò domani per giudicare meglio.
…è appena arrivato Moka a casa e mia e mi ha portato un regalo benaugurante…due rotoli di carta igenica inpacchettati a modo!!

It’s freezing cold these days in Milan, and today it is a holiday too, so not much action going on. I stayed in all day to think about various things and to practice for the recordings. I made up a version of Strade d’appennino with the piano played on a higher octave than the demo. Since I cannot make up my mind as to which version I like best, I had to record the new version, make a rough mix and send Peter the mp3. See what he thinks.
I am also proposing a new intro for Non di sola andata. I think it can work great on the stage too.
Mancano solo due giorni all’inizio del lavoro in studio. Sento di aver fatto in parte i “compiti”… e in parte no. Ho passato gli utlimi due giorni a scrivere con ordine meticoloso tutte le mie parti (piva, flauto, basso cori…) su carta!
Nei provini si trattava di parti ottenute dalla sintesi dell’ improvvisazione registrata e della scelta fatta a tavolino riascoltando e ricreando ancora una parte che mi soddisfacesse. A volte l’idea in pre-produzione è talmente forte che non hai bisogno di pensarci troppo e sai che è l’intuizione giusta.. a volte…dopo ore di lavoro ti fermi e lasci la parola al tempo….spesso basta riascoltare il giorno seguente per capire che devi ricominciare da capo.
A questo punto, prima di incidere i miei strumenti…devo imparare di nuovo quello che ho lasciato fermentare nei provini…e qui viene fuori tutta la mia parte classica!! Ho la forte ansia di non ricordare quello che ho scelto e suonato…faccio sempre quel sogno orribile prima degli eventi musicalmente importanti: sono sul palco e non si gonfia la piva…non so cosa devo suonare e dagli strumenti non esce niente…Ah!!
Allora sono andata a comprare un nuovo quaderno pentagrammato, per l’occasione, con l’emozione dei bambini i giorni prima della scuola in cartoleria a comprare l’occorrente…con il profumo di carta e matite tutto intorno. Sono tornata a casa e ho scritto tutte le mie parti nota per nota formando una partitura precisa di tutto quello che suonerò …mi sento meglio! Forse non farò ancora quel sogno in questi giorni… o forse mi troverò in studio con Peter in gran forma che ha un’idea bella e nuova! Cambiamo tutte le mie parti…..

Great news! Italian indie legend bass player Gianni Maroccolo has agreed to feature on our album. Gianni is a talismanic musician: he has played in BOTH the two Italian most important groups of the 80s and 90s, Litfiba and CCCP - Fedeli alla linea. He’s got loads of groove, and is also a good friend. In fact, in a way it’s through him we made contact with Peter: French musician/producer Hector Zazou produced the first album of Gianni’s band PGR, and called Peter on to mix it. It was Lorenzo “Moka”, PGR’s sound engineer, who first mentioned Peter’s name to us.
Anyway: we’ve got now to pick the song for Gianni to perform on…
